Coach Cooper's astonishing career with Temple University coalesced into a record-breaking performance in an important game against arch-rival Pitt -- and Coach clinched it with a 21-yard field goal!
TEMPLE UPSETS PITT ON FIELD GOAL, 13-12
PHILADELPHIA, September 22 (UPI) - A clutch 50 year third-down pass, from Lee Saltz to Willie Marshall, set up a 21-yard field goal by Jim Cooper with 26 seconds left to play today that gave Temple a 13-12 upset victory over Pitt.
The Owls (2-1) took their final possession at their 33-yard line, and Saltz promptly passed to the tailback Paul Palmer for 15 years. A clipping penalty later in the drive moved the ball back to the 39, and Temple faced a third-and-19 situation. Saltz then made the long pass to Marshall down to the Pitt 11 with 2:01 to play. The Owls then ran the the clock down with three running plays and advanced to the 5. From there, Cooper, who had made a career-high 51-yard field goal to make the score 12-10 earlier in the quarter, made the game-winner.
